Wu · Yang Earth day master
The Yang Earth day master: the mountain
Yang Earth, also called Wu Earth, is one of the ten day masters in BaZi, the Chinese Four Pillars. In short, like a mountain: solid, true to its word, carries the weight, and is hard to move.
What Yang Earth is like
In BaZi the Yang Earth day master is pictured as the mountain, the larger, more outward form of Earth. People with this day master tend to share a few habits:
- Calm when things fall apart, so people gather around them.
- Slow to warm up, impossible to shake once they do.
- Makes room for everyone and doesn't keep score.
You can usually spot a Yang Earth: the one everyone calls in an emergency, with the same haircut since 2015.
The blind spot
Changing their mind takes a written proposal and about six months.
Yang Earth and Yin Earth
Yang Earth and Yin Earth share an element and differ in scale: the mountain and the farmland. Yin Earth: takes everything in, keeps a lot to itself, and grows whatever it's given.
Where Earth sits among the five elements
Earth belongs to late summer and the turn between seasons, the center and the color yellow. Fire leaves Earth behind it, and Earth carries Metal in its seams. Wood breaks it up with roots. Earth banks and dams Water.
| Relationship | Element |
|---|---|
| Keeps Earth going | Fire |
| Earth keeps going | Metal |
| Keeps Earth in check | Wood |
| Earth keeps in check | Water |
These are the traditional relationships between elements. In a real chart they are only a starting point: what helps one Yang Earth person can crowd another, depending on how much Earth the rest of the chart already has. How the five elements work.
Yang Earth in love
With a partner, a Yang Earth is steady and protective, and shows it by turning up, fixing things and staying. Changing their mind about a person takes a long time, which cuts both ways.
Yang Earth at work
This is the one who holds a project together when it gets heavy. Clear responsibility and long horizons suit them, and what they pick up rarely gets dropped.
Getting along with Yang Earth
Everyone gets used to the steady one fast. Give a Yang Earth time before a decision, and the reasons up front if it is a big one. Once they agree to something, there is no wobble.
What tends to help
If you're Yang Earth, what tends to help is somewhere that holds still long enough to stand on. BaZi also asks how much Earth the rest of your chart holds. With a lot of it, the habits above run louder and the work is finding somewhere for all of it to go. With little, the same habits are there with less behind them, and rest takes longer to do its job. How to know if you're Yang Earth
Your day master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born, counted on the Chinese solar calendar. Each of the ten stems comes around once every ten days, so about one person in ten is Yang Earth. Your birthday is enough to find it; if you were born close to midnight, the hour can decide which day counts. Fusola calls this your Core.
Your day master is a different thing from the element of your birth year, the one paired with your zodiac animal. Plenty of Yang Earth people were born in a year of another element.
The other half of the label
In Fusola, the day master is half of your type. The other half is your shaping force, the strongest of ten forces in your chart (the Ten Gods, in BaZi books). Together they make a label like Yang Earth · Grit, one of 100. The ten shaping forces.
Find your day master

Is Wu Earth the same as Yang Earth?
Yes. Wu is the Chinese name of the heavenly stem, so English BaZi books call it either Wu Earth or Yang Earth.
What is the difference between Yang Earth and Yin Earth?
They share the element and differ in scale. Yang Earth is the mountain; Yin Earth is the farmland. The Yang form is bigger and more outward, and it shows in how each one handles people.
Is Yang Earth the same as being born in a Earth year?
No. The year element comes from your birth year and goes with your zodiac animal. The day master comes from your birth day, so a Yang Earth day master can be born in any year.
How rare is the Yang Earth day master?
Not rare. The ten heavenly stems take turns, one per day, so roughly one person in ten has any given day master, Yang Earth included.
What element is good for Yang Earth?
It depends on the whole chart. BaZi weighs how strong your Earth is against everything else in your four pillars, so two Yang Earth people can need different things. Your free reading shows how much of each element your chart holds.
Does a Yang Earth day master decide my personality?
In BaZi it describes one part of it. The day master is one of eight characters in a BaZi chart, and the rest of the chart changes how it shows up. That is why Fusola pairs it with a shaping force.
Which day masters get along with Yang Earth?
The element cycle gives a first impression: Fire keeps Earth going and Earth keeps Metal going. How two people actually get along depends on both full charts, which is what a Duet reading in Fusola looks at.
