Jia · Yang Wood day master
The Yang Wood day master: the tall tree
Yang Wood, also called Jia Wood, is one of the ten day masters in BaZi, the Chinese Four Pillars. In short, like a tall tree: stands straight, keeps growing toward what it believes in, and would rather break than bend.
What Yang Wood is like
In BaZi the Yang Wood day master is pictured as the tall tree, the larger, more outward form of Wood. People with this day master tend to share a few habits:
- Does the right thing even when it costs them.
- Grows slowly and keeps growing. Thinks in years, not weekends.
- The one people lean on when something needs carrying.
You can usually spot a Yang Wood: the one who says "leave it to me" and actually means it.
The blind spot
Can't say "I was wrong" without a running start.
Yang Wood and Yin Wood
Yang Wood and Yin Wood share an element and differ in scale: the tall tree and the vine. Yin Wood: supple, knows what to lean on, and finds its way up by winding around.
Where Wood sits among the five elements
Wood belongs to spring, the east and the color green. Water keeps Wood growing, and Wood is what Fire burns. Metal is the axe that cuts it back. Wood breaks up Earth with its roots.
| Relationship | Element |
|---|---|
| Keeps Wood going | Water |
| Wood keeps going | Fire |
| Keeps Wood in check | Metal |
| Wood keeps in check | Earth |
These are the traditional relationships between elements. In a real chart they are only a starting point: what helps one Yang Wood person can crowd another, depending on how much Wood the rest of the chart already has. How the five elements work.
Yang Wood in love
Yang Wood is loyal and slow to commit, then all in. Love looks like building something together, from weekend plans to a home. In a fight they dig in, so leave the door open and let them walk through it later.
Yang Wood at work
Long projects suit them, and so does being the person a team leans on. A goal they believe in, plus some say over how to get there, brings out their best work. Being micromanaged wears them down fast.
Getting along with Yang Wood
Give a Yang Wood a direction and room to grow toward it. Arguing them out of a position head-on rarely works; showing them a better route usually does, as long as they can take it without saying they were wrong. Promises from them get kept, so think before you ask for one.
What tends to help
If you're Yang Wood, what tends to help is room to grow in a direction nobody assigned you. BaZi also asks how much Wood the rest of your chart holds. With a lot of it, the habits above run louder and the work is finding somewhere for all of it to go. With little, the same habits are there with less behind them, and rest takes longer to do its job. How to know if you're Yang Wood
Your day master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born, counted on the Chinese solar calendar. Each of the ten stems comes around once every ten days, so about one person in ten is Yang Wood. Your birthday is enough to find it; if you were born close to midnight, the hour can decide which day counts. Fusola calls this your Core.
Your day master is a different thing from the element of your birth year, the one paired with your zodiac animal. Plenty of Yang Wood people were born in a year of another element.
The other half of the label
In Fusola, the day master is half of your type. The other half is your shaping force, the strongest of ten forces in your chart (the Ten Gods, in BaZi books). Together they make a label like Yang Wood · Grit, one of 100. The ten shaping forces.

Is Jia Wood the same as Yang Wood?
Yes. Jia is the Chinese name of the heavenly stem, so English BaZi books call it either Jia Wood or Yang Wood.
What is the difference between Yang Wood and Yin Wood?
They share the element and differ in scale. Yang Wood is the tall tree; Yin Wood is the vine. The Yang form is bigger and more outward, and it shows in how each one handles people.
Is Yang Wood the same as being born in a Wood year?
No. The year element comes from your birth year and goes with your zodiac animal. The day master comes from your birth day, so a Yang Wood day master can be born in any year.
How rare is the Yang Wood day master?
Not rare. The ten heavenly stems take turns, one per day, so roughly one person in ten has any given day master, Yang Wood included.
What element is good for Yang Wood?
It depends on the whole chart. BaZi weighs how strong your Wood is against everything else in your four pillars, so two Yang Wood people can need different things. Your free reading shows how much of each element your chart holds.
Does a Yang Wood day master decide my personality?
In BaZi it describes one part of it. The day master is one of eight characters in a BaZi chart, and the rest of the chart changes how it shows up. That is why Fusola pairs it with a shaping force.
Which day masters get along with Yang Wood?
The element cycle gives a first impression: Water keeps Wood going and Wood keeps Fire going. How two people actually get along depends on both full charts, which is what a Duet reading in Fusola looks at.
