Gui · Yin Water day master
The Yin Water day master: the rain
Yin Water, also called Gui Water, is one of the ten day masters in BaZi, the Chinese Four Pillars. In short, like the rain: quiet and sensitive, picking up on what people feel before they say it.
What Yin Water is like
In BaZi the Yin Water day master is pictured as the rain, the smaller, more inward form of Water. People with this day master tend to share a few habits:
- Hears what's under what people say.
- Has a rich inner world and a good imagination.
- Gets in quietly and changes things slowly, the way rain does.
You can usually spot a Yin Water: the one who texts "you ok?" right when you weren't.
The blind spot
Feels everything, explains nothing, and expects you to just know.
Yin Water and Yang Water
Yin Water and Yang Water share an element and differ in scale: the rain and the ocean. Yang Water: big-minded, quick, always moving, and hard to contain.
Where Water sits among the five elements
Water belongs to winter, the north and the deep color the old books call black. Metal gathers Water, and Water keeps Wood growing. Earth banks and dams it. Water puts out Fire.
| Relationship | Element |
|---|---|
| Keeps Water going | Metal |
| Water keeps going | Wood |
| Keeps Water in check | Earth |
| Water keeps in check | Fire |
These are the traditional relationships between elements. In a real chart they are only a starting point: what helps one Yin Water person can crowd another, depending on how much Water the rest of the chart already has. How the five elements work.
Yin Water in love
In love, a Yin Water is intuitive and tender, tuned to small changes in your mood. The wish is to be understood without explaining everything, which takes patience on both sides.
Yin Water at work
Reading people and situations is the gift, and work that rewards listening and noticing puts it to use. A flexible week suits them better than a rigid schedule.
Getting along with Yin Water
Moods reach a Yin Water before anything is said, yours included. That can look like distance when it is closer to taking everything in. Say what you need plainly; guessing games are something they are good at and tired of.
What tends to help
If you're Yin Water, what tends to help is people running at your speed who don't need the speed explained. BaZi also asks how much Water the rest of your chart holds. With a lot of it, the habits above run louder and the work is finding somewhere for all of it to go. With little, the same habits are there with less behind them, and rest takes longer to do its job. How to know if you're Yin Water
Your day master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born, counted on the Chinese solar calendar. Each of the ten stems comes around once every ten days, so about one person in ten is Yin Water. Your birthday is enough to find it; if you were born close to midnight, the hour can decide which day counts. Fusola calls this your Core.
Your day master is a different thing from the element of your birth year, the one paired with your zodiac animal. Plenty of Yin Water people were born in a year of another element.
The other half of the label
In Fusola, the day master is half of your type. The other half is your shaping force, the strongest of ten forces in your chart (the Ten Gods, in BaZi books). Together they make a label like Yin Water · Grit, one of 100. The ten shaping forces.

Is Gui Water the same as Yin Water?
Yes. Gui is the Chinese name of the heavenly stem, so English BaZi books call it either Gui Water or Yin Water.
What is the difference between Yin Water and Yang Water?
They share the element and differ in scale. Yin Water is the rain; Yang Water is the ocean. The Yin form is smaller and more inward, and it shows in how each one handles people.
Is Yin Water the same as being born in a Water year?
No. The year element comes from your birth year and goes with your zodiac animal. The day master comes from your birth day, so a Yin Water day master can be born in any year.
How rare is the Yin Water day master?
Not rare. The ten heavenly stems take turns, one per day, so roughly one person in ten has any given day master, Yin Water included.
What element is good for Yin Water?
It depends on the whole chart. BaZi weighs how strong your Water is against everything else in your four pillars, so two Yin Water people can need different things. Your free reading shows how much of each element your chart holds.
Does a Yin Water day master decide my personality?
In BaZi it describes one part of it. The day master is one of eight characters in a BaZi chart, and the rest of the chart changes how it shows up. That is why Fusola pairs it with a shaping force.
Which day masters get along with Yin Water?
The element cycle gives a first impression: Metal keeps Water going and Water keeps Wood going. How two people actually get along depends on both full charts, which is what a Duet reading in Fusola looks at.
